Smoking is major contributing factor when it comes to gum disease. Smoking damages the small blood vessels in your gums and decreases blood supply that carries healthy nutrients to your gum tissue. It is also a significant risk factor for oral cancer, and this risk is further increased when people drink alcohol and smoke. Smoking also stains your teeth and contributes to bad breath.
Sugary foods and soft drinks can damage the enamel that protects your teeth. Hard lollies, mints and cough drops that contain sugar dissolve slowly in your mouth and are especially harmful to your teeth. Acidic drinks can also eat away at the enamel layer of your teeth. Avoid snacking constantly. Snacking constantly can cause plaque to build up on your teeth, which can increase the risk of getting cavities.
Clenching and grinding wear down teeth and may lead to headaches, pain in your jaw muscles and jaw (temporomandibular) joints.
Some people require a custom night guard, which we can make for you. These help prevent damage to your teeth caused by night time grinding and ease the tension in your jaw muscles.
